Non-Surgical Treatment, Orthopaedic Counselling & Physiotherapy

Non-surgical treatment and orthopaedic counselling are often recommended for patients who do not require surgical treatment. These modalities are as vital as “high tech” surgery.

Physiotherapy is used in

  • The immediate post-operative period of an operation.

  •  Knee injuries like ligament and soft tissue injuries not needing surgery

  • All anterior cruciate ligament ( ACL) injuries.

  • Patella dislocations of subluxation, especially after the first and second episodes.

  • Non-traumatic knee conditions like patella tendinitis and quadriceps tendinitis. These often benefit from local utrasound treatment as well.

  • Osteoarthritis of the knee which is not severe enough for an operation may benefit from targeted sessions of knee physiotherapy to strengthen muscles.

However, results of physiotherapy for osteoarthritis of the hip are not as favorable as for other joints. Nevertheless, if part of the pain pattern is related to a back problem, then physiotherapy can be beneficial.

Local ultrasound treatment can also be used to assist in cases of trochanteric bursitis and snapping iliotibial band (snapping or popping hip)

Orthopaedic Counselling:

As a high-volume joint replacement surgeon with extensive experience, Mr. Mahaluxmivala understands that optimal patient selection is crucial for achieving the best surgical results.

High-risk and overweight patients may still benefit from joint replacement surgery, provided they are fully informed about the risk-benefit ratio.

Therefore, Mr. Mahaluxmivala accepts these patients after ensuring they have been adequately counselled and all conservative or non-surgical treatments have been exhausted.

The clinic advocates for:

  1. General counselling on "joint health," advising patients to lose weight if overweight and engage in regular activities such as walking, cycling, swimming, and traditional gym workouts.

  2. Exploring non-surgical treatments such as osteopathy, acupressure, and acupuncture, if surgery is not an option. The clinic emphasises respecting other specialties to maximise patient care.

  3. Encouraging patients to join gyms and work with personal trainers to ensure that exercises to strengthen muscles around the knee are performed correctly. Correct form and sustained muscle-strengthening regimes are crucial for addressing lower limb and back pain issues.

For patients in the Hertfordshire and Essex areas, the clinic can recommend personal trainers to assist with these efforts.
